Thornberry Animal Sanctuary: Successful Cat Microchipping Event and the Importance of Microchipping

Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, held a cat microchipping event that turned out to be a tremendous success!

Over the course of just two days, we managed to microchip over 80 cats, ensuring that they are now safely and securely identifiable.

This event was not just about increasing the safety of our beloved pets but also about preparing for the upcoming changes in the law regarding cat microchipping.

New Microchipping Law Effective from June 10th

Did you know that from June 10th, it becomes a legal requirement to have your cat microchipped in the UK? This new legislation is designed to help reunite lost pets with their owners more efficiently and reduce the number of unidentified cats in shelters. Here’s why microchipping your cat is so important and how you can get your cat chipped in the UK.

Why Microchipping Your Cat Is Important

Permanent Identification: Unlike collars and tags, which can be lost or removed, a microchip provides a permanent means of identification for your cat. It is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted under your cat’s skin.

Quick Recovery: If your cat goes missing, a microchip greatly increases the chances of being reunited. When found, a quick scan at a veterinary clinic or animal shelter can retrieve your contact information.

Legal Requirement: From June 10th, all cats in the UK must be microchipped by law. Failing to do so could result in a fine, ensuring that all cats are traceable and helping reduce the number of stray cats.

Medical Records: Microchips can also store important medical information about your cat, which can be crucial in emergency situations.

How to Get Your Cat Microchipped in the UK

Visit Your Vet: The most common way to get your cat microchipped is to visit your local veterinarian. The process is quick and relatively painless, similar to getting a vaccination.

Animal Shelters and Charities: Many animal shelters, offer microchipping services. Keep an eye out for special events or campaigns where you might get your cat chipped at a reduced rate.

Mobile Microchipping Services: Some companies offer mobile microchipping services where they come to your home to chip your pet. This can be convenient if you have multiple pets or if your cat is particularly anxious about travel.

Pet Stores and Community Events: Some pet stores and community events offer microchipping services. It’s worth checking local listings to see if any upcoming events offer microchipping.

The Process of Microchipping

The microchipping process is straightforward and quick. Here’s what to expect:

Consultation: The vet or technician will explain the procedure and answer any questions you might have.

Insertion: The microchip is inserted under your cat’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades, using a special needle. The process takes just a few seconds.

Registration: After the chip is implanted, your details will be registered in a national database. Ensure that you keep your contact information up to date.

Microchipping your cat is a simple, effective way to ensure their safety and comply with the new legal requirements. At Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, we are committed to helping our community keep their pets safe and happy.
