Caring for neglected animals since 1988
Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
Registered charity 1018048
For all these years, our mission has been the same: to rescue abandoned, neglected and unwanted animals, and give them a second chance. We are based in North Anston in South Sheffield, and rescue hundreds of animals every year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and other farm animals, across South and West Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and beyond.
We are dedicated to finding secure, loving homes for as many animals as possible and providing the best care to those who remain with us.
As an independent charity, it’s thanks to the kindness of our supporters that we are able to do all that we do. We rely entirely on fundraising, donations from members of the public, legacies and businesses for our continued survival.
Every bit of support, whether it's volunteering, donating items, raising money, adopting animals from us or even just spreading the word about us, is very much appreciated.
Thank you from all the staff, and animals, here at Thornberry for taking the time to learn about us.
Thank you for your interest in supporting the work we do; we rely solely on fundraising and donations to continue our work. We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of our supporters and there's lots of ways to get involved!

Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question for us? We're always happy to help! We've included some FAQs below, give us a call on 01909 564 399 between 11am and 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
Why is there an Adoption Fee to pay and what does it include?
The adoption fee you pay when you take home an animal from Thornberry Animal Sanctuary goes directly back into the care of other animals in need and covers the cost of the steps we take to ensure your complete peace of mind when you adopt. See How to Adopt for details of what's included for dogs, cats and rabbits.
Where are you and what are your opening times?
We are located in North Anston, around 5 minutes from the M1, junction 31 and are open between 11am and 3pm, every day except Mondays. (Please note we are temporarily closed to the public due to a recent virus and will re-open from Saturday 25th February).
See Visit Us for a map of our location and contact details. Please note we kindly ask for a 50p entry donation for each adult which helps towards our running costs, we are very grateful for any additional donation you choose to make.
When are the Café and Jumble Sales Open?
Our café and jumble sales are open at weekends only. You can visit us to donate items for the jumble sales during normal opening hours. See Support Us for information on items we need.
Do you rehome birds or reptiles?
We currently only rescue and rehome dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. If you are looking for an animal to adopt or have one you are no longer able to care for that isn't one of the above, we are unfortunately unable to help.
Can I adopt if I have children or if I don't have a garden?
We feel it's really important to get to know and your personal circumstances, just as much as we get to know every animal on an individual basis. So living in a flat or having children, does not necessarily mean you can't adopt from us, we review every individual case carefully to ensure we find the perfect match! See Adopt Me! to see the animals currently awaiting homes.
I have found a baby bird or injured animal, should I bring it you?
We do not have the facilities to care for injured wildlife or any animals involved in road traffic accidents. Please note that baby birds often spend time on the ground when they have just fledged and mum will be coming back to them, please leave them where they are! If they are in immediate danger, such as on a path or road, pick them up and move them to nearby grass.
